The Great Unknowns......

Most dahlia growers, especially those of us who are still learning almost everything, lose track of the names of tubers at times. I won't even say how may "unknowns" we had at the end of last season, but there was one of these that was dug up right by one of the faucets at the Russell Street garden. We didn't know what the flower looked like and we couldn't find a tag anywhere......Appropriately, we wrote "faucet" on the tubers. I gave some of these away, but kept one for my garden. I'm happy to announce that the slowly opening bud looks like a white A or AA bloom. It is still early, so I won't know which variety it is until next week, probably. But I am sure glad I planted it! As I have been watching the flowers we have planted in the gardens, I am really starting to understand why Dad liked "the big ones" so much! It is really exciting to see how amazing they look once they are in full bloom! I'm learning so much about myself as a grower this year, especially what I like and what don't like. Next year, when I choose what to plant, I will have a much better idea!
